One night, years ago when my daughter was in middle school (she’s 32 now!) as we sat down to dinner she asked us to share something that we loved about our self. She started by sharing that she loved being an empathetic person. My husband went next, he stated that he loved his ability to take charge of virtually any situation. I went last and said that I loved my smile.
I remember how I contemplated my daughter’s simple question for days. I mulled over what else I loved about myself. I found it to be a difficult task. I realized that all too often we (I know I’m not alone here), concentrate on what we don’t like about ourselves. We are our own worst enemy and tend to focus on what we believe to be our inadequacies. In fact, if someone were to ask me about my shortcomings I could rattle off a list immediately without hesitation!
It took me over a week to come up with a few qualities that I love about myself. Here they are:
My knack for thinking “outside the box”
My compassion for others
My tenacity and integrity
The depth of my feelings
My amazing intuition
Self-love is a good thing! Honor and value the things you love about yourself.
